  • "Some of my finishing media that I own and have relatively extensive experience with using include several Kosher grade Coticules, vintage Eschers , Chinese 12K, Spyderco UF, Tam O'Shanter, and several different types of diamond and chromium oxide paste.
Over the past months I have had the pleasure of using several Japanese Nakayama stones that I purchased from oldschoolshaving.net
After ordering and experimenting with my first Nakayama, I quickly ordered two more based on the performance and value, that these vintage Japanese stones provide.
In my opinion they produce the absolute sharpest and most comfortable shaving edge out of anything in collection including all of the much more expensive German Eschers that I have used and own.

  • "The Nakayama Maruichi hone I bought from oldschoolshaving.net is by far my favorite finishing hone.
I find the edge it gives is the finest of all the hones I've tried (over 2 dozen in the 10k+ grit range). It also provides great feedback and cuts relatively fast. The edge produced is comparable to those produced by 15k-30k pasted strops when used without slurry."

  • “The Nakayama has now been used on 5 razors and it left me with 5 of the sharpest and smoothest edges I've ever had. The typical rating is between 20-ish and 40-ish thousand grit and this one seems to be on the higher end of the spectrum as it was finer than .5 diamond and CrO pastes that I've used. These are hard stones, so there is very little wear from use, and the fact that I got it to polish just fine without the need for a slurry means that this stone will likely end up in the hands of my great grandsons before it is worn out.”.

  • “I don't find that I need a huge line-up of fine-grit hones to get great edges. It cuts quickly enough that you could go from a 4K to 8K hone without a lot of intermediate steps. Inserting more hones won't hurt, but it's not the case that you need a perfect 10K edge or this hone is worthless. I am going straight from the 4-6K Belgian blue to this Japanese hone. The Japanese hone has basically replaced the coticule in my progression. I go from the DMT 1200 to the Belgian blue to the Japanese. I'm sure I could get away with doing fewer strokes if I stuck another hone or two in there, but it's hardly necessary.”
