FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.

  • (Q) Do I need to lap my Japanese natural hone when I first receive it?

        (A) No, the surfaces of these hones come flat. We test each hone individually, and if we think one should be lapped, we will note that in the description.

  • (Q) I heard I should lap my Japanese natural hone after every use, is this correct?

        (A) No, these hones are very hard and are final polishers, therefore you are not going to make the surface uneven for a very long time. If you choose to lap one of these hones in the beginning, it should not need another lapping again.

  • (Q) What grit would you rate the Japanese natural hones at?

        (A) It is almost impossible to give a grit rating for natural hones, because each one is unique. To give an approximate grit rating of each hone would cost time and money, which would ultimately be passed on to the consumer.

  • (Q) What is a slurry stone?

        (A) A slurry stone is a small stone that is usually of the main hone, or of a slightly higher grit level than the main hone. It is used to generate a slurry from the main hone, which helps increase the cutting power. A slurry stone that is a coarser grit than the main hone should not be used, as this can cause cross contamination, and ultimately ruin the edge.

  • (Q) Can a Japanese natural hone be used without a slurry stone?

        (A) Yes a natural stone can be used without a Nagura, sometimes it can be very time consuming to use one without a slurry stone. We will advise in our description, whether or not we think one should be used or not

  • (Q) Why can you not appraise photographs of natural Japanese stones?

(A)To effectively appraise a natural Japanese hone it must be examined in person and tested. Looking at a picture cannot tell us, what type, quality, the cutting strength or the hardness of a hone.

  • (Q) Can both sides of a traditional Japanese razor be used?

        (A) Both sides "can" be used however the resulting shave would be less than desirable. The technique involved in honing said razors, traditionally makes only the concave side to shave with.

  • (Q) My country charges high tax, can yu declare a lower value so I don't have to pay tax?

        (A) No. All packages over $50 are insured, and we declare the true value for insurance purposes, in the unlikely event items arrive broken or get lost in transit.
